The Return of the Gentleman

Milan fashion week heralded the return of the dapper gent with crisp suits, cravats and many a classic hat walking down the Italian catwalks. As a fan of vintage eras, I long for times gone by when men and women wore hats everyday rather than confining them to special occasions. Don’t get me wrong I love a casual weekend look on a guy but you can’t go wrong with a nice suit! (Think Patrick Jane of The Mentalist fame)

Alexander McQueen seemed to be channelling the ever classic Robert Redford’s style as Jay Gatsby. Wide leg trousers, casual knits and a soft colour palette brought back the art deco era. The pyjama trend of ladieswear seems to have filtered into the men’s collections with this printed velvet collared smoking jacket and silk pyjamas look.

Silk prints are key across the women’s resort 13 collections and the men are getting on board with this trend too. Burberry, Etro, Gucci and Roberto Cavalli, to name but a few, all featured paisley and scarf style prints across their clothing collections for next spring summer. Burberry are going from strength to strength and their interpretation of classic dress scarf prints on casual bomber jackets and short sleeve shirts makes it wearable everyday.

Belstaff and Trusardi’s collections featured a similar muted, earthy colour palette. Cigar browns mixed with faun, beige and a pop of mustard yellow.

While designers such as Brioni and Iceberg were influenced by a nautical colour range and Italian costal style. Casual tailored shorts mixed with linen jackets or a cardigan and topped off with a classic trilby as Brioni’s style. Iceberg went for a younger take on nautical mixing classic block stripes with flashes of orange and again topping off with a matching trilby.

So guys take a leaf out of the fashion book according to Milan and get ready for summer 2013!
